Karon Beach in Phuket Thailand is a favorite holiday destination for families. The beach which is located along the western side of Phuket has beautiful soft white sand and is situated approximately 40 kilometres from Phuket International Airport.
This is one of the nicest Thai beaches you will find in southern Thailand as there is very little development along the length of the foreshore, and quaint looking fisherman's boats can still be seen parked along the beach. But despite this relaxed and quaint feeling, there are plenty
of fun activities available on the beach to keep each of the family entertained.
Karon lies to the south of the bright lights of Patong Beach and 20 kilometres from Phuket town and is Phuket's second largest beach measuring approximately 3 kilometres in length. Being a long and open beach means that there is generally little shade provided from the hot Thailand sun, although there are numerous beach umbrella's and banana lounges for rent along the length of the beach.
This is one of the more unique Thailand beaches because Karon Beach is well known for it's lovely soft dry sand making a loud squeaky noise under your feet when you walk over it.
Karon Beach offers it's visitors all the usual fun activities including snorkeling, swimming, boating scuba diving, and canoeing to name a few. If you feel a little sore due to over exertion after engaging in any of these activities you can even get a Thai massage from local businesses that set up their tents along the edge of the beach.
While this beach has the same basic activities as the more popular beaches like Patong Beach, it never seems to feel as crowded
because the beach is so spread out. This also means that you can always find a quiet place along the sand and not be bothered by other visitors.
vendors also frequent this beach selling food, drink and other nick-naks. At the southern end of the
beach is the Karon Plaza region which is located along a small road away from the beach. This area contains a variety of small businesses including a market, hotels, guesthouses pubs and this end of the beach is also close to the Dino Park Mini Golf fun park.
SHOPPING AND OTHER VENUES
northern end of the beach is where you will find the majority of the
local businesses including shops, bars, restaurants, travel agencies
etc. This is also where most of the nightlife occurs. While it is more
subdued than Patong there
is a mini version of Patong's Soi Bangla area which includes a variety
of bars, clubs and pubs including the Australian Walkabout Sports Bar which has an Australian theme to the pub.
These establishments come to life after dark with loud music, big screen TV's and dancing girls. Some of the bars and pubs include: the Gun Bar, the Farang Bar and the Clapton Bar to name a few. A more family friendly pub is the Irish Angus O' Tools and with a professional chef in the kitchen you can be sure to get a decent meal.
