MBK Bangkok is a large multi-level shopping mall located in the Pathan Wan or Siam district, which is the hub of Thailand shopping. Most tourists who visit Bangkok do so to experience the world famous shopping which provides opportunities for savvy shoppers to gab some really good bargains. MBK provides shoppers with not only a selection of the trendy international brand named goods, but also an assortment of well priced locally produced clothes which are of high quality.
The central retail district of Bangkok is characterized by its large air-conditioned multi-level shopping malls. Most of these malls incorporate modern multiplex cinema's, food courts and the most up-to date consumer goods. My favorite shopping mall is one of the biggest and the best and its called MBK.
MBK Bangkok was completed back in 1985
and is located in a district known for its large malls which also include Centralworld and Siam Paragon. This is a very popular mall and it does get busy especially at Christmas time when foreign tourists visit in larger numbers.
With 8 levels and more than 2,000 specialty shops including the popular Robinson's Department Store, MBK offers shoppers a cool environment and just about everything they could wish for under the one roof.
Open daily from 10 Am until 10 PM this shoppers haven is popular with both tourists and Thai's because it is possible to find some great bargains here, even within the larger retail outlets.
Once you step inside MBK you will find just about everything you could want including clothes (such as T-shirts, jeans, dresses), furniture, electrical goods, sunglasses, perfumes, handbags (see image above) , jewelery, shoes and leather goods just to name a few items.
Also, if you are looking for a new mobile phone or accessories for your existing phone, than MBK is the place to come. There are around 400 vendors on one floor which sell mobile phones and all the latest accessories.
Like all shopping malls there is also a large number of food outlets scattered throughout the complex, including the usual western food chains (such as KFC, McDonalds, Burger King) along with a number Asian outlets.
There is also a large Food Center located on the top floor where local vendors sell freshly prepared traditional Thai cuisine including, steamed and fried rice, pork, fish, curry, pad Thai and soup (see image above).
If watching one of the latest Hollywood and Thai movies (presented in both English and Thai) is your idea of relaxation then you will be pleased to know that there is a SF Cinema City complex located on levels 7-8 (see image above). I have visited here a number of times and have found the cinema's to be clean while the sound and picture quality is first class.
Tickets are priced around 150 THB (i.e. about 5 dollars AUD and USD) per person and popcorn, drinks, chocolates and chips are available at the candy bar.
Just remember, before each movie begins, a short promotional clip regarding the King of Thailand is played, and everyone is required to stand during this presentation..
One of the most convenient aspects of MBK Bangkok is that it adjoins the large Pathumwan Princess Hotel. People staying at this hotel can simply walk from the hotel foyer directly into MBK both day and night.
My elderly mother and siblings have each stayed at the Pathumwan and enjoyed the convenience and safety of being able to traverse between the hotel foyer (see image below) and the shopping mall without leaving the safety of the building.
The best time to visit MBK or Bangkok is during the Christmas period of December. Even though Thailand is a Buddhist country they still provide an impressive display of Christmas lights for the foreign tourists. These lights extend along the shopping shopping precinct, between MBK, Siam Paragon and Centralworld malls (see image below).
Definitely put MBK Bangkok on your places to visit list when you are visiting Thailand.
MBK Bangkok opens daily between the hours of 10 Am and 10 PM, 7 days a week and is located at 444 Phayathai Road Wangmai Pathumwan Bangkok Thailand 10330.
The mall is located next to the BTS Skytrain Nation Stadium Station which is an integral component of the Bangkok's transport system. Just exit at National Stadium Station and travel along the short covered walkway right to the front door of MBK.
